Seventeen ranks and 222 badges. Free includes the first 7 badges. The rest unlock on Base or Premium.
Safety first, badges second
Never rush a maneuver, flight, or milestone to earn a badge. Only attempt a maneuver or task when you are trained and ready, and talk it over closely with your flight instructor first. Your CFI decides when you're ready, not this app. A badge can always wait; safety can't. If something doesn't feel right, the right call is to wait, turn back, or stay on the ground, and that earns a Good Call badge, not a lost one.
A rank unlocks when its unlock rule is satisfied AND the previous rank is unlocked. Most badges can be logged in any order and are never lost. A few training milestones wait for an earlier badge, such as first solo before solo cross-country before the private checkride.
No badges for rushing, bad weather, or flying tired.
Show the safety rules
No badges for bad weather, pushing limits, low passes, speed, minimum fuel, flying tired, or finishing training fast.
Streaks are weekly, never daily. A logged Good Call keeps a flying streak alive, so a streak never pressures anyone to fly.
Smooth-landing badges count only from a stabilized approach. A go-around is the better badge.
Hour badges celebrate totals, never how fast those hours were flown.
Medical badges are informational and point you to an aviation medical examiner.
Fun Flying stays inside a student's privileges, or it happens with a CFI or another qualified instructor. Tailwheel, seaplane, backcountry, aerobatics, and actual clouds need that instructor, or the pilot's own certificate, currency, and endorsements. Hometown flights stay at normal legal altitudes. Photos are from the ground or a passenger, never from the pilot flying. Smooth-landing badges count only from a stable approach.
Badges count logged time only: with a CFI aboard, or as PIC holding every rating and endorsement the aircraft needs (complex, high-performance, tailwheel, multi-engine, seaplane, glider, rotorcraft).
Always complete the school's, club's, or owner's checkout and follow its rental rules and insurance requirements.
Nothing rewards flying an unfamiliar aircraft alone, in marginal weather, or in a hurry. Collecting types is about learning, not risk.
Hangar Collection
One badge per common US training aircraft model, plus panel and simulator badges and collection tiers at 3, 5, 10, and 20 different types. Anytime, self-reported, never required for a rank.
Each pin uses its own frame. The drawings are not manufacturer artwork.
Aircraft and avionics model names (for example Cessna, Piper, Diamond, Cirrus, Beechcraft, Mooney, American Champion, Aeronca, Tecnam, Icon, Van's, Schweizer, Schleicher, Robinson, Garmin, Avidyne, Redbird, Frasca, and their model names) are trademarks of their respective owners. They're used only as factual references to the aircraft you flew. Grease the Journey is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any manufacturer.
The 17 ranks
Each rank is a Journey Crest. The drawings are our own, not military or airline insignia, and not an FAA seal.
1. Preflight
Cloud Mist enamel · 0 wing strokes · RAMP
The walkaround before every flight: you've checked the plan and you're ready to start.
A high-wing trainer parked on the ramp in the cool blue hour before dawn, three-quarter front view, wheel chocks and a tie-down rope, a pilot's flashlight beam resting on the cowling for the walkaround. No wings yet.
Unlock: Create a profile and finish the roadmap quiz.

2. Engine StartLocked
Cloud Mist enamel · 0 wing strokes · RUN-UP
Paperwork done, propeller turning. You're officially in training.
Head-on view of the trainer on the run-up pad, the spinning propeller shown as a translucent polished-metal disc, a small green enamel run-up marker beside the hold-short line. No wings yet.
Unlock: FAA medical certificate (first-class recommended for the airline path) + student pilot certificate + first logged lesson with a CFI.
The book work is behind you, and the runway is yours.
The trainer lined up on the threshold piano keys, nose toward you on the centerline, the runway receding to the horizon. The first wing nubs appear: one short polished stroke on each side.
Unlock: Ground school complete (online or in person) + Private Pilot knowledge test passed.
Just you, the airplane, and a very empty right seat.
The trainer climbs out toward you above the departure end, aligned with the runway behind it; through the windshield the right seat is visibly empty. Single short wing strokes level with the horizon.
Unlock: First solo flight (with the student-pilot solo endorsement from your CFI).
The airplane is climbing and so are you. Private pilot!
The trainer in a steady climb, three-quarter front, over a patchwork of fields; a vertical-speed needle points up in the lower border. The rim turns Clear Sky blue for the first certificate. Single medium wing strokes sweep up.
The trainer breaks out on top of a flat stratus layer into clear blue, three-quarter front, climbing; the cloud deck is a frosted-enamel band across the frame. Two layered wing strokes.
The positive exchange of controls: now you teach it.
A low-wing trainer cockpit seen from just above and behind: instructor in the right seat, student in the left, hands on the controls; an open logbook in relief below. The rim turns silver for instructors. Two-stroke wings cradle the logbook.
A twin turboprop flies past a towering cumulus whose edge is a polished silver rim; the light comes from behind the cloud, with no sun visible. Three-stroke wings with silver tips.
The turboprop at altitude rides a sweeping engraved jet-stream current that flows across the capsule and out into the wings, joining the three strokes.
You've hit the airline minimums. Everything lines up from here.
A regional jet with rear engines and a T-tail on final, flying toward you down a magenta course line to a runway below; glidepath dashes descend to the threshold. The rim turns gold, and wings grow to four strokes.
Unlock: ATP aeronautical-experience minimums met: 1,500 hours, or the reduced R-ATP minimums you qualify for (e.g., 1,000 or 1,250 hours with a qualifying aviation degree).
Jet engines turning. You've finished the ATP Certification Training Program.
A front-on turbofan intake with fan blades in polished metal fills the frame; a small regional-jet silhouette sits in the top arc, four-stroke wings extend like exhaust trails.
Unlock: ATP CTP (Certification Training Program) completed.
The airline interview is done. The runway is right in front of you.
A view from the flight deck over the glareshield: approach lights lead straight to the runway centerline dead ahead at dusk. Four-stroke wings angle slightly down, like a descent.
A conditional job offer from an airline. Congratulations!
At dusk a regional jet flares toward you over the threshold, landing lights on, aligned with the centerline; a steady green light-gun beam reaches across from a tower at the frame's edge.
Unlock: Conditional job offer (CJO) received for a first-officer position.
Airline first officer, released to the line. The landing you've been training for.
The signature emblem: a narrowbody airliner seen head-on at the moment of touchdown on the centerline, main gear just kissing the runway with a faint wisp of tire smoke, runway receding behind it. Full five-stroke wings and a soft butter-gold glow in the rim.
Unlock: ATP certificate + type rating + IOE (initial operating experience) complete; released to fly the line as a first officer.
Upgrade to airline captain, the goal at the end of the journey.
A widebody airliner cruises above a sea of clouds in calm twilight blue, three-quarter front; no sun or rays. The largest five-stroke wings. The end of the journey.
Unlock: First trip in the left seat as an airline captain after upgrade training.
A badge marked Required is part of that rank's unlock rule, except Full Panel, which opens with either the CFII or the MEI checkride. CAVU is the bonus for finishing every badge in a stage. CFII and MEI count as one. Fun Flying and Hangar Collection badges are never required for a rank. The airport and state passport that goes with Fun Flying is part of Base.

Sharing
Share buttons open X, Facebook, or LinkedIn with caption text you can edit there. Instagram is a downloaded image plus a caption you copy. The site does not post for you. Cards are private until you choose one. Nothing on a card is a location, an exact hour total, or the words certified or verified.
Free accounts earn the Preflight rank and the first 7 badges: Flight Plan Filed, Hooked, Clean Bill of Flight, Licensed to Learn, Hangar Family, Walkaround Ready, and Hands On. The Engine Start rank is not free. When its unlock badges are logged, that rank shows as ready to claim. Base or Premium opens it immediately, and those badges are not logged again. The other 215 badges and the 16 ranks after Preflight show as locked previews and can be earned only on Base or Premium.
If a paid plan lapses, badges already earned stay saved and visible on the profile (read-only); new paid-tier badges can't be added until the plan is renewed. Nothing earned is deleted. Locks are about features only. Safety content (Good Calls, the integrity note, and all compliance notices) is visible to everyone.

Questions
When does a rank unlock?
A rank unlocks when its required badges are logged and the previous rank is already unlocked. You can log any badge at any time. A badge is not lost if your training happens in a different order.
Should I rush a flight to earn a badge?
Never rush a maneuver, flight, or milestone to earn a badge. Only attempt a maneuver or task when you are trained and ready, and talk it over closely with your flight instructor first. Your CFI decides when you're ready, not this app. A badge can always wait; safety can't. If something doesn't feel right, the right call is to wait, turn back, or stay on the ground, and that earns a Good Call badge, not a lost one. The pledge and the FAA checks are on /safety. Safety content is visible on Free, Base, and Premium.
Are these badges FAA certificates?
Badges and ranks are self-reported and for motivation only. They are not FAA certificates, ratings, or endorsements, and they never replace logbook endorsements, your CFI's judgment, or FAA requirements. Optional CFI sign-off notes are a personal record only.
What does a share card include?
A card can show a handle or first name, the badge or rank, the month and year, an optional note, and greasethejourney.com. It does not show a location. Sharing is opt-in, one card at a time, and the site does not post for you.
